Choosing The Right Lifeguard Swimsuits For Women

By Lila Bryant

There are quire a few options for a woman looking for lifeguarding suits. You can find ones with thicker straps and comprised of one or two pieces. Some suits are better for certain tasks and duties than others. This guide serves to provide information about common styles of lifeguard swimsuits for women that are available. The information that follows can help you decide which type of suit would be more suitable for you.

Generally, when we think about female lifeguards we tend to think of them in traditional one piece suits. If the one piece swimsuit is what you want, you have several choices. You can choose thick or thin straps. The back can be traditional, racerback, or keyhole styles. For lifeguards, the swimsuit should be comfortable enough to be in it for an extended period of time, wet or dry. It should also allow the proper amount of movement without causing raw spots. You can choose different colors, but red and navy blue are the most common two that are chosen.

Two piece suits are another option. These are available as tankinis or bikinis. The lifeguarding styles are designed with constant action in mind. They have added stretching abilities for comfort yet fit snugly. Female lifeguards tend to choose styles that have lower or triangle necklines to increase comfort on hot summer days. Tankinis provide similar coverage to a one piece, but the freedoms a bikini allots.

You can also choose a reversible swimsuit. With this type, you can choose the style you want and two colors. The primary color, which is often red, and identifying chest letters are on one side. If you turn the suit inside out, you have a second color. Many female guards choose this option so they do not have to buy another swimsuit to use on their off time.

Lifeguarding shorts are another option available for female guards. You have a few choices with these shorts. Board shorts, also known as surfing shorts, are common because they are lightweight and loose but not bulky. A functional style is another choice. These shorts fit to the female body more than board shorts, but they have multiple pockets. The fabric tends to be thicker but it is not constricting. They are specifically designed for professions like lifeguarding.

The style you choose will only serve its purpose if the size is right. To obtain the right size, you will need to get multiple measurements. You will need to measure your hips, waist, torso, and bust. These measurements will need to be compared to the chart the manufacturer uses. For measurements that fall in between, choose the higher measurement on the chart to ensure that the suit will not be too small.

Lifeguarding suits need to provide the amount of coverage you desire while also being durable and comfortable. Choose fabrics that do not restrict your movements. Also, the fabric or blend will need to be able to hold up to the abuse of the water. For example, a pool will contain chlorine while the ocean water will have high salt concentrations and sand.

Although there are many factors that are important in the swimsuit you choose, you should make sure that it is something allowed by your employer. Possible employer restrictions are equally important and you must consider any dress code that is required. You choices may be limited for the styles that you can choose.
