Dental Implants, Factors To Consider

By Harry Izzo

Despite all the advances in dental care these days, people still suffer from tooth loss, most often caused by tooth decay, disease and injury. Years ago the only things available for missing teeth were bridges and dentures. Today dental implants have become the best treatment for patients with these issues.

The dental implant procedure is not inexpensive, but because this procedure is so successful many more people are requesting it. They fuse into your jawbone and become a permanent part of your mouth. They replace a lost tooth with one that's just as close to your natural ones. Every day you can brush them and floss them.

Cavities never develop in a dental implant. They never interfere with adjoining teeth like dentures are apt to do. If you take good care of them they will take good care of you for a lifetime.

There are two kinds of dental implants: those that are surgically inserted in the bone and those that are placed on top of that job. Endosteal is the insertion method and subperiosteal is the latter method. The first is the most common and the second is for those who are not able to have traditional dentures because they have low bone height.

The reasons you should consider having dental implants are many. The chief reason is that it changes your outward appearance. Everyday things are easier, like speaking and chewing. They are a lot more comfortable than wearing dentures. With healthy gums, so long as you are healthy enough to undergo routine extractions, your dentist can prescribe dental implants for you. You simply need enough bone to hold the implants in place.

Alternatives to dental implants will be suggested to you if you are a heavy smoker or if you suffer from chronic disorders such as diabetes and heart disease. You might still be able to have implants, but you should realize that these health issues are something to be discussed with your dentist.

Dental insurance does not cover dental implants, but you can check to see if they are part of your medical plan. Check with your dentist and review the details of your coverage and payment options before you give him the green light.
