The Advantages Of Chiropractic Therapy

By Essie Osborn

The basic theory of chiropractic is that changes that occur to the function and the structure of the skeleton of the body and the structures surrounding it will have an effect on a person's general health. The focus of chiropractors has traditionally been on the spinal column, but they see all the nerves, joints and muscles as sources of health problems.

These practitioners state that the skeleton and the muscles in the body should not be thought of as separate parts to other sections of the body. The entire body should be viewed as a single unit as all the sections have a distinct role to play. Chiropractic therapy places particular emphasis on the spine as the nerves link other sections of the body with the spinal column, including all the internal organs.

If you suffer from a misalignment in one area it may cause pain, but will also have an effect on some other part of the body. An example of this is if you have a problem with your lower spine. To compensate for the problem, the upper section of your spine will work harder. This could cause a headache due to the strain suffered. The pain in your lower back could cause you to walk incorrectly. This could cause problems in your knees or ankles.

Your spinal nerves are connected to other regions of your body. This is why some of your symptoms may show up in other areas of your body, such as experiencing pain or numbness in your thighs and legs. When you first visit your practitioner, an evaluation will be done on your overall health. This could include a full, thorough physical examination. The practitioner will observe the manner in which you stand and move, examine your spine, pelvis and head, and may ask you to undergo imaging scans.

Any adjustments that follow will be done in a lying down, standing or sitting position or a range of these positions. The judgment of the practitioner and your symptoms will determine the position. You may hear clicking sounds during the therapy session as the practitioner adjusts your spinal joints. This process may not cause you any pain at all.

A range of adjustment methods may be used by the chiropractor. The practitioner will use various hand pressure methods, as well as special equipment. He or she may have to make use of wedges underneath your body or make use of special adjustable tables to help with the adjustments.

Your health conditions will be considered when the practitioner makes the decision on the techniques to be used. This is done to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the procedure. He or she will consider if you are showing signs of arthritis, circulation disorders, fractures and your age and body size will be taken into account. All previous medical procedures and your current medications will also be considered.

The role of chiropractors is considered to be that of a primary contact practitioner. This means that they have been trained to determine the most suitable therapy program for your situation. If your condition requires a referral to another health-care practitioner, your chiropractor will have the knowledge and training to do this effectively.
