The recent discovery of underground water reserves in Africa means a lot more than fresh water to the millions of people that haven't had access before; it means a new and much more sustainable way of life if they can truly tap into this resource effectively. Here are some things that would change if Africa was able to tap into this resource.
Public Water
This would ultimately increase the sustainability of farming and other production agriculture as water is the major bottle neck for most of the farmers in the country. With water in abundance, there would be an increase of crops that would bring a higher premium as well. Not just the standard no-name crops. When we talk about food security though, we are really talking about the health and prosperity of a nation of people who need access to good nutrition. Really good nutrition starts with access to good clean water that has not been tampered with. This is something that hundreds of millions of Africans have no access to.
Exploiting the ground water
While it may seem like a good idea to take all of the water that we can from underground. It can cause some major issues as well. For instance, there has been extensive boring in Mexico and they have found that as they have continued to pull water from the ground that there has been increased instability with the buildings and other structures in major citys. It has effected the sediments in the soil and has started to cause a sort of underground erosion. This could cause some major damage in cities all over Africa if people started exploiting too much ground water. This is why many conservationists believe that there needs to be more focus on collecting and retaining water than on exploiting it.
War
Ultimately the major wars that we have faced in the past have been mostly over oil and other minerals. In Africa it has been diamonds as well. The major impending wars in the world will soon be over a real "hot" commodity, Water. Water is everything! Anyone who thought that oil was something to fight about will soon find that they were mistaken when they realize that their country is out of water. This will be a fight for life for many nations and especially those that lack the resources to afford water. This is why many developing nations will need to find a sustainable way of getting water.
Individual Water Filters
Ultimately things will not change much unless Africa finds a way to reach the Subsurface Water Flow. This may seem easy in our more capitalist society, but in Africa there are all sorts of loopholes that people have to jump through when undergoing such extensive projects that could have a long term effect on the overall well-being of the country. While it may seem like a simple solution, there are many things that will play a role in Africa's future search for sustainable fresh water access.
