Essential Information About NJ Nursing Schools

By Marissa Velazquez

Those planning to pursue a career in nursing must first obtain an appropriate education. There are numerous NJ nursing schools from which to choose. A person can enroll at a vocational technical school in order to learn the necessary skills to work in this field, or he or she may pursue a degree at a college or university. However, regardless of which type of education one chooses to obtain, the job description of a nurse remains the same.

Each program differs somewhat from the others; however, all students of nursing will learn the same standard skills during the course of their education. The curriculum offered is usually a combination of hands-on training at a medical facility and classroom lectures. The time frame for completion will depend on the learning institution where one has chosen to pursue his or her education.

With most programs of this type, students are trained to complete various duties. The latter include the placement of equipment such as urinary catheters or intravenous lines, the monitoring of vital signs, and the administration of drugs. Students also learn to help with surgical procedures, monitor patients' bowel and bladder habits and food consumption, and assist patients with their daily living activities.

All training programs include instructions on how to chart each patient's progress. This task requires that one learn medical abbreviations and terminology. Enrollees must also acquire an education in mathematics. The latter may include ratio and proportion, and in some instances, algebra.

As mentioned above, the time frame for completion depends on which type of school the student has chosen. Generally speaking, the time it takes to complete such a program is between 1 year and 18 months. College courses are usually 18 months in length, while vocational technical schools usually offer one-year programs.

If a nursing science degree is being pursued, whether an associate or bachelor program, one should prepare to attend school for two to four years. A college degree is necessary if one wants to become a registered nurse. Those who want to seek employment as practical nurses can acquire the appropriate education at a vocational technical school.

A high school education is a prerequisite of most schools. The individual must also pass the designated entrance examination. Once a person has completed his or her education, the next step is to receive a passing grade on a state approved exam, after which a license is typically issued. When these tasks have been accomplished, the individual can pursue employment in this field.

After making the decision to become a nurse, one must carefully choose a learning institution. This is because all programs are a bit different, and therefore the student should strive to locate the school that best matches his or her needs. This is the best way to ensure a positive outcome. Many job opportunities will be available after one has graduated, due to the great demand for registered and practical nurses. Additionally, experts expect this demand to continue to increase until the year 2018. This is why attending NJ nursing schools is a wise course of action for any individual who desires job security in the future.
