Chiropractic Care Can Help Effectively Eliminate Hip Pain

By Maureen Margaret Joswing

Dealing with hip pain can be very challenging to those who suffer from it and it can interfere with their activities. This discomfort can range from a dull ache to very intense and it can sometimes be felt into the back and thighs as well. The most effective strategy for alleviating this problem is to find the root cause and correct it. Chiropractors are holistic healers who can provide patients with safe, natural alternative therapy that will accomplish this.

There are different causes for discomfort where the femur joins the pelvis. Sometimes the cartilage wears out, it may be due to an injury or condition resulting in inflammation, or it may be referred pain that actually has its source elsewhere. The chiropractor will first aim to find the cause rather than just treat the symptoms.

A misalignment in the sacroiliac joints which are found in the lower back, is another common reason for hip discomfort. These sensitive joints are especially prone to strain and stress exerted on them by some types of movement, and often from pregnancy and childbirth which often results in expansion and misalignment of these structures.

The first step in treating this problem will be to reduce swelling, and next to restore normal mobility to the joint. The chiropractic practitioner will be able to determine what the underlying condition is by thoroughly examining the patient and taking a detailed health history from him or her. There may be the need for x-rays or other diagnostic tests as well. Once this issue has been identified, the best course of therapy will be recommended.

A combination of therapeutic modalities and necessary lifestyle changes seems to work best for most patients, promoting healing and reducing the likelihood that the pain will return. If care is sought early on, permanent damage to the joints is not likely to occur. Chiropractors stimulate the body's natural ability to heal itself and do not prescribe drugs, which they consider an obstacle on the road to healing.

The use of chiropractic adjustments to restore alignment to the affected joints is a common approach many practitioners employ. They may also use massage therapy and periodic application of ice to reduce swelling and promote healing. The patient may also be given a set of passive range of motion or stretching exercises to perform at home that will help restore mobility and lessen the chance of a recurrence.

A nutritional supplement that will speed up healing may also be prescribed for the patient. A good quality fish oil capsule is often recommended by the practitioner. These have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and encourage healthy nervous tissue in the body.

When developing an effective course of therapy to alleviate hip pain, the chiropractor will normally try to keep the patient moderately active but not in a way that worsens the discomfort. The proper combination of exercise, nutrition, and physiotherapy will help most sufferers recover in a reasonable period, but this healing time will depend on the severity of their condition.
