Cancer Awareness Can Assist Cognitive Operation

By Rob Sutter

If there's one thing that can be said about cancer awareness, it's that effort is constant. You want to be able to focus on all of the proper measures that can be taken in order to help patients in the long term and certain therapies are, more likely than not, going to stand out more than others. That being said, what are some of the most helpful that can prove themselves? From what I have learned, it would have to be research that includes some of the most unique components.

There was an article written on Medical Xpress that spoke about the idea of whole-brain radiotherapy. This is seen as one of the common methods in this field but to say that it is entirely helpful is something that I may not be able to support. The reason that I say this is because WBRT, at least in large doses, is something that could lead to a greater prevalence of cognitive declination in patients. Aren't there other methods that can be put to use with different components utilized, you may wonder?

Deborah Watkins-Burner, a professor at the Neil Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, was able to work with a team of researchers. This group addressed 508 eligible WBRT patients with this type of cancer but went about an entirely different method along with it. Each of them were given a placebo or Memantine within the first week of WBRT. Of course, there have been results to be cited but I didn't realize just how strong they would have proven themselves to be.

In fact, I believe that authorities along the lines of Voices against Brain Cancer should be able to take these particular findings into account. There was much better cognitive function in those who took Memantine and there have been strong delays in cognitive decline as well. It's one of the biggest concerns when you're talking about cancer awareness in general. Knowing that such components can actually slow this down is telling and it seems like this could be one of the many positive steps made for better research.

It's interesting because typically you would not think that certain drugs would be able to work as well as you might have imagined. After all, some of the most common methods are put to use time and time again, so the mind registers them as the best that there could be. However, researchers understand that there are greater possibilities out there, so they should be recognized as well. More importantly than that, though, they should be ones that are incorporated, being put to use in the long term.
