Can A Fern Aid In Brain Cancer Treatment?

By Rob Sutter

We have all heard about the various methods that have been put in place for the sake of helping brain cancer. Certain clinical drugs which have been utilized in the past have been implemented with various results. However, what if I were to tell you that an aspect from nature itself could have an impact on the treatment methods that are being put together for patients? This is where a particular fern may come into play and there is quite a bit to talk about, too.

An article on WTNH.com went into detail about a particular fern native to North America could actually play into brain cancer in a positive way. This is known as the Christmas fern and it is seen, in particular, within New England. This is interesting enough but for those who show support for organizations like Voices against Brain Cancer, you may be asking yourself, "What does this have to do with cancer treatment?" After work has been done, it has been determined that an active component can prove useful.

Southern Connecticut State University medical specialist Dr. Sarah Crawford went into detail about this particular plant and how it can potentially help in the way of cancer studies. The reason for this is because, compared to other species, the Christmas fern is viewed as one of more potent plants. With this in mind, you may be curious as to what had come about as a result of these studies. If you are curious to know, the results that Crawford discovered were actually quite strong.

As it seems, Crawford put together a triple cocktail combination which was able to come into effect due to the fern extract and a chemo drug known as carmustine as well as an anti-inflammatory known as curcumin. With this set in place, it was seen that it was successful in killing off aggressive cancer cells. According to Crawford, 50 percent of the cells were killed, which is strong for a condition that has no clear treatment as of this time. Only time will tell if further progress will be made.

It is apparent that this cancer type is going to be able to bring about a number of studies. This probably goes without saying but you have to take into consideration the fact that, as of this moment, there is no solid treatment for this condition. I believe that while patients have been helped time and time again, it's not like there is one treatment that is made to help everyone. Crawford's studies have shown that nature may be able to help and I hope that this idea is seen in the future.
