Travel Essentials - Yellow Fever Certificate

By Jonny Blair

To travel the world with the correct precautions and health awareness you really need to get your Yellow Fever Certificate. It is compulsory for some countries and comes in extremely handy, not just for your own safety but for laws within each countries. It is strongly recommended to get this vaccination before heading to Africa and parts of Asia.

Before setting off on your journeys, it's important to check what injections you need. Pop to see your local travel doctor and they will assist you. Tell them where you are planning to go. In terms of getting the Yellow Fever injection here are the important things to note:

1. Some countries ask for it on border control so its better to have the certificate ready to show them rather than risk not having it and being turned away.

2. You almost always have to pay for it. I cannot remember the cost of my Yellow Fever Vaccination, though it was somewhere in the region of $60 AU Dollars (in 2010).

3. Trust exactly what your Travel Doctor has said and go with it. Don't think twice about paying for it - you need to pay for these things and staying healthy on your travels is vital to you. So head to the travel doctor, take their advice and stick with it.

4. Your Yellow Fever Certificate needs to have an official stamp and a doctor's signature on it. I have attached a photo of my stamp above.

5. Your Yellow Fever Certificate needs to be from an Accredited Yellow Fever Vaccine Centre.

7. It's important to take your Yellow Fever certificate with you everywhere you go - you can never be sure which countries will ask for it.

7. Your Yellow Fever Certificate should run for ten years.

This is a very serious subject and therefore it's important to check with your travel doctor and take his advice on it.

ALWAYS check with and ask your local travel doctor what medication and injections you need for certain countries. NEVER trust websites or fellow travellers. Basically just get the jabs to be safe.

Yes, I have built a lifestyle of travel, but I couldn't do it without my Tuesday's Travel Essentials and I certainly wouldn't have risked doing Africa and parts of South America without having my Yellow Fever Certificate.

What exactly is Yellow Fever? - It's a dangerous disease that you don't want with symptoms including vomiting and muscle pain.

How is it contracted? As with a lot of diseases, through a bite from a certain type of female mosquito (again, even after getting your vaccination, best to keep taking your malaria tablets, using insect repellent and taking all precautions against bites)

What countries are affected by Yellow Fever? Most of Africa and parts of South America and Asia.

What price is a Yellow Fever Vaccination? It depends where you are but imagine that it should be between $40 and $90 depending on where you are. Safe travels!
