Home Treatment For Head Lice

By Louise Bell

Head lice or otherwise known as pediculosis is a type of hair infestation that involves annoying small gray or brown, wingless six-legged parasite that has tiny claws, feeds on human blood for their survival and lives on the human scalp. During elementary or preschool years or those children under the age of twelve are more prone to have head lice. This kind of infestation is very easy to spread among children especially if an infested child comes in contact with another child's hair, clothing, scarf or hat. If that happens, the parasites will have the opportunity to transfer into a new host hair and scalp and that's when cross-contamination happens.

Head lice infestation can become annoying and irritating even if it is not a life threatening or serious condition. Annoying since a person that is infested with head lice may tend to scratch his head often due to persistent itching caused by the head lice not only in the head but as well as in the back of the neck and ears. Other people who have head lice infestation may also not show symptoms of it. Head lice infestation does not mean that a person has poor personal hygiene because head lice live on clean hair.

"Nits" are eggs of head lice and they usually appear as oval in shape and white to yellowish in color. Usually mistaken as dandruff, nits and dandruff are not similar because nits are harder to remove since they are attached to the hair shaft. Here are some useful tips on some home treatments and remedies to remove head lice:

-One of the simplest tool or way to remove head lice is with the use of a lice comb which is available to be purchased in most medical stores. Aside from being affordable, using a lice comb is also one of the most effective home treatments for head lice.

-Another home treatment for head lice is with the use of your regular shampoo with some added ingredients. Additional things to add are one teaspoon of tea tree oil, a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil and three tablespoons of olive oil. Once the mixture has been combined well you can apply it to your hair and scalp and leave on for 30minutes while covering with a plastic shower cap. After 30 minutes you can proceed with rinsing your hair.

-Use of mayonnaise as home treatment for head lice has been practiced for many years already. You can use mayonnaise to treat head lice by simply applying it to your scalp at night and cover your head with a shower cap and sleep with the shower cap on. You can rinse the mayonnaise in the morning using your regular shampoo. Checking your hair regularly is recommended to monitor if there are still remaining head lice living in your head.

-Another known home remedy for head lice is with the use of petroleum jelly. Same with applying mayonnaise, you need to apply your petroleum jelly into your scalp at night and cover your head using a shower cap. Using the petroleum jelly will help to loosen lice from your hair but it is also a challenge to remove greasiness caused by the petroleum jelly in your hair. If the greasiness is not removed with the use of regular shampoo, you can try to use dishwashing detergent instead of your regular shampoo when rinsing your hair.
