Achieving The Best Results From An Airbrush Fake Tan

By Haywood Hunter

Few things can lift the spirit like a suntan does. It gives you healthy-looking skin, makes your white clothes look fantastic and can even make you look trimmer. However, the same sun that causes that beautiful glow also causes skin cancer and premature ageing. A sunless tan is a great way to get the benefits without the risks. Having the product airbrushed on will ensure that the results are even. Most salons offer an airbrush fake tan.

An airbrush fake tan does not involve the sun at all. Instead, chemicals react to dead skin cells to color them, creating a darker skin. The active ingredient that causes this effect is dihydroxyacetone or DHA, a carbohydrate often naturally derived from sugar. Some people may be allergic to DHA, so it's always a good idea to test the product on a small patch of skin before you get an airbrush fake tan.

Before the session, you may use a gentle exfoliating product to remove loose skin cells. This will ensure a more even end result. However, remember that you need dead skin cells for the DHA in the airbrush fake tan product to react with. For this reason, do not over-exfoliate with products like loofahs.

Shaving and other hair removal methods have an exfoliating effect. However, it's better to remove hair before getting an airbrush fake tan. This is because hair removal afterwards will make the color fade faster by removing the newly colored skin cells.

It's important that your skin is completely free of lotions, creams and other beauty products before you let the beautician apply the airbrush fake tan. Skin products create a barrier so that the DHA cannot reach the skin cells it's supposed to color. However, you should apply creams to the parts you don't want tanned, like the soles of your feet, to create a more natural-looking result.

You may wear as much or as little as you want for the session. However, DHA stains clothing, so don't wear your brand-new designer bikini. Also remember that tight-fitting clothing can rub off your airbrush fake tan or cause you to sweat, so for a few hours after the procedure you should try not to wear a bra and opt for loose clothing instead.

When the product reacts with water, it stops working. You need to stay dry after the procedure until the color has developed enough. Don't take a shower for at least eight hours and avoid sweating too much. A talcum powder can help with this. If it's rainy outside, make sure that your skin is completely protected from the raindrops.

To make your airbrush fake tan last longer, avoid exfoliating your skin. Even a washcloth can remove dead skin cells so use your hands and a gentle cleanser instead, especially during the first post shower after getting your airbrush fake tan. Keep your skin moisturized and remember that just because you now have a healthy glow, it doesn't mean that you can skip the sunscreen.
