How To Take Care Of A Shih Tzu

By Leslie Moore

A Shih Tzu is a breed of dog that is known to have a beautiful appearance because of its long hair, short body and round eyes. Because of its physical characteristics, it is considered to be a high-maintenance breed which needed a different kind of attention than other kinds of dogs. Aside from the special attention that you need to provide, the Shih Tzu being a companion dog has their own unique attitudes and you need to be aware of these if you are planning to have one in your home.

Understanding a Shih Tzu

A small lawn or backyard is enough for a Shih Tzu if they need exercise and some place to experience a little bit of sunshine. Since they are small, an exercise is not much of an issue unlike the kind and amount of attention that they require. Shih Tzu dogs can be jealous about small kids which is why some pet stores would advise to grow a Shih Tzu in an environment with no children. Because of their jealousy, they can probably bite or attack small kids. Teach the small kids in your home on how to be good to a Shih Tzu but monitor their moments closely.

Shih Tzus are also the type of dogs that can get stressed easily and they may suffer from sleeplessness and nervousness if they were caught by it. Aside from this, stress can make them bark erratically, destroy things, and tear the house down. Consider their emotions most of the time and don't forget to check and talk to them every once in a while. This can promote a healthy growth among this breed of dogs together with a little exercise and other activities under the heat of the sun.

Maintaining a Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is one of those types that would need constant grooming. Their hair is the first thing which requires excessive care from pet parents as it can easily be tangled and matted. You would need to comb their hair everyday to prevent this from happening. A detangling spray can be used if you find it too hard to comb their hair. If a detangling spray is not available in your house, try cutting the tangled portion of the hair. Since their hair can reach their eyes, proper hair care can save them from irritations and other infections.

Regularly clean the face of a Shih Tzu with a damp wet cloth. Since they are hairy dogs, mucus and dirt can build up easily around the eyes, nose and mouth. You can also take them to a bath but their hair would require a special kind of shampoo that's designed for pooches with long hair. Food is also something that you have to be meticulous about. It is recommended by veterinarians to feed Shih Tzu dogs with high quality food. This may seem expensive but it will cost you less in the long run. Higher quality dog foods requires less feeding and it also guarantees fewer trips to the hospital and less costs for the medications.
