All About Speech Therapy

By Dolores Rieger

The way we converse has a huge effect in our lives. It is not evident but how we converse has an effect on our relationship with others. Because it feels common and natural, our speech is just one of the things we usually take for granted. What we fail to see is that not all people are blessed with this gift. A number of people get speech disabilities from birth while others only acquire them from accidents of some kind. Either way, these people don't have the same benefits as we do. Fortuitously, speech therapy was created in order to assist ill-fated people like them.

Speech therapy is a branch of medicine that specializes in addressing the speech and language impairments of both children and grownups alike. Speech and language conditions, like other kinds of conditions, can be found in many different forms. These afflictions are distinguished and addressed by professionals called speech and language therapists (SLT). Of course, a speech problem can not be cured right away. Like many treatments, it is a continuous process. Patients need to go to their therapists at least twice a week until they can function as normally as possible.

Over the years, there have been a growing number of demand for SLTs. Contrary to a teacher or a medical professional that can only practice in school or in the medical centers, SLT's are not confined to a single workplace. They can practice in medical facilities, colleges, health centers, or perhaps even in their patient's houses. In fact, they are not limited to just one company! I even know an individual that is employed by both hospitals, health centers, and home service. Speech therapists can even decide to be self-employed, so they can work on their own time.

Being a speech therapist is no simple accomplishment. Because most patients are diagnosed with serious conditions, you would have to be extremely calm and persevering. It is actually more of a career rather than a job, since you would have to really love what you do in order to endure it. Not all speech therapists can be understanding and calm with their patients. In reality, many can be aloof and disinterested regarding the progress of their patients. You must therefore make sure to choose a therapist that is both educated and passionate about his or her vocation. It is also essential that the therapist has a pleasant and gentle personality.

Our speech is a gift that we often take for granted. We don't realize that there are people unlucky enough not to be blessed with it. Fortunately, the discovery of speech therapy has given these people hope that they might one day make use of their mouths and tongues as normally as we can. Not only are their oral skills improved but their self-confidence are also boosted. Nevertheless, since not all therapists can be enthusiastic and patient with their patients, it is important to be careful in deciding on the therapist to work with.
