The Best of Laser Training

By Tammara Odessa

An integral part of cosmetic health care now regularly includes laser training. Ranging from hair removal to skin rejuvenation and even eye surgeries, there is no doubt that the advent of laser treatments has revolutionalised modern skin treatments. In this article we will discuss laser training for hair removal and skin rejuvenation in brief.

Devices available for Laser procedures

There are many devices out on the market that can be used for this treatment. It's important for one to learn about the available tools and their treatment applications. For example, Palomar lasers are considered the industry standard in laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation.

Advice on Laser Training

Not surprisingly, technical training is required in order to properly operate these devices. This remains the case for whatever procedure is required to be performed.

Understanding the principle

Laser therapy for hair removal focuses specific wavelengths of light which pulsate at a specific frequency and are directed to the target area. In the case of hair removal, it is the hair follicle. In the case of skin rejuvenation, it is targeting different layers of skin. The skin or the base of the hair follicle absorbs light which is then converted to heat. Ultimately, the heat is responsible for the change - either the hair removal, or the removal of wrinkles and scars. One of they key advantages of lasers is their ability to target a very specific area without impacting other areas. It is therefore extremely useful in managing localised hair or skin problems.

What about the Equipment?

There are a number of devices that are available to administer laser therapy. The devices that are used for both skin rejuvenation and laser hair removal are similar though their mechanism of action is slightly different.

A CO2 laser or a YAG laser are used for photorejuvenation. In other words, common skin rejuvenation. These devices emit intense pulsed light, which is absorbed by the melanin under the skin along with the capillaries in areas where it is applied. This generates heat which destroys the excess pigment that may be present.

Hair removal uses a process called 'selective photothermolysis'. In this case, intense pulsed light is directed towards the root of the hair follicle. Within the root of the hair follicle are different kinds of melanin and by destroying this, laser therapy can effectively remove hair from several areas and stop hair from growing again.

Understanding the Side-effects

Laser treatment is usually painless and side-effects are very few. Recurring treatments are not necessary for a longer period of time than many other cosmetic procedures. Skin redness is one of the side-effects that can occur. Sometimes, it may be prudent to perform preliminary tests to assess for the likelihood of developing problems.
